During the week of March 11-17, Hawaii Island police arrested 36 motorists for drunken driving. Eight of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Four of the drivers were under the age of 21.

During the week of March 11-17, Hawaii Island police arrested 36 motorists for drunken driving. Eight of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Four of the drivers were under the age of 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, 19; Kona, 12; Puna and South Kohala, 2 each; and Hamakua, 1.

So far this year, there have been 277 DUI arrests compared to 302 during the same period last year, a decrease of 8.3 percent.

There have been 274 major accidents so far this year compared to 332 during the same period last year, a decrease of 17.5 percent.

So far this year, there have been 10 official traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared to seven fatalities during the same period last year, an increase of 42.9 percent.

To date, two of the fatalities have been linked to drivers under the influence of drugs, none to alcohol.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
